Côte-Vertu underground garage: Supporting growth and future generations

Conference of the Montreal Section of the CSCE

On November 30, the CSCE Montreal Section invites you to a captivating technical presentation on the Société de transport de Montréal's (STM) Garage Côte-Vertu project. This project for an underground garage for metro trains, located near the Côte-Vertu metro station, has been designed to meet a number of essential needs, including train maintenance, additional parking spaces at both ends of the line served, and reduced downtime and increased trip frequency to relieve the growing pressure on the expanding metro network. Comprising three buildings, including a ten-storey underground maintenance workshop, the project was carried out with sustainability in mind, incorporating innovative measures to enhance the experience of metro users and the quality of life of local communities.

Presentation summary

The presentation will highlight the main elements of the STM's Côte-Vertu Garage project, a key infrastructure for the Montreal metro system. It is located in the borough of Saint-Laurent, at a depth of 25 meters underground, and was inaugurated in June 2022. This ambitious project, launched in the spring of 2017, is now operational, playing a key role in improving transport capacity by increasing service frequency on the Orange Line at peak times through the addition of extra trains. The STM also anticipated growth in ridership with the extension of the Blue Line to Anjou, on the east side of the island of Montreal. The new underground garage, budgeted at $521.1 million including taxes and financing costs, includes 10 parking spaces for metro trains, and required the construction of 1.5 kilometers of tunnels to park the trains and connect them to Côte-Vertu station on the metro network's orange line. On the surface, the infrastructure comprises three auxiliary buildings, two of which serve as mechanical ventilation stations and emergency exits for employees, while the third is dedicated to employee garage access and the Azur train maintenance workshop.
